I am so excited to be sharing with you my first ever crochet pattern. This will be your new favorite shawl. Best of all I’m sharing it here with you for FREE! Yay! Who loves free as much as I do?
I was inspired to make this blanket poncho, ruana, wrap, shawl, cozy thingamabob by sweaters I saw in the window of Abercrombie and Fitch. I knew I wanted to make my very own! It really is so cozy to wear and can be worn so many different ways! It would look especially nice with skinny jeans and boots but, I am not so fashionable and don’t wear those. I am going to wear it with everything. It is the perfect fall accessory. Cozy and not bulky. This free crochet wrap should be the next thing you make.
This is a very easy, beginner friendly pattern. I used Bernat Super Value Stripes yarn in Jungle Green. I was really surprised by how much I liked this yarn! The colors are beautiful and it feels so soft. The price was a huge plus as well. Each skein has 264 yards and was only $2.79 at my local Meijer (a grocery store). I think this will look wonderful in solids, tweed, or longer striping yarn as well. Actually I don’t think it would look bad in any yarn! Any easy to care for worsted weight yarn will work great.

Supplies Needed:
Approximately 1,650 yards of worsted weight yarn. For me this was just over 6 skeins of the Bernat Super Value Stripes
J 10-6mm crochet hook
The only stitches needed are chain and HDC (US) or HTR (UK)
Finished size is 64 inches long and 48 inches wide. I am 5’2″ and it is roomy on me. If you are much shorter I would suggest using fewer stitches. I think you could be a fair bit taller and have it still fit great.
Boho Cozy Wrap Pattern:
Chain 142 or whatever length you like. I draped the chain over my shoulder to see how long it should be. It will grow a bit but it’s a good way to decide how long to start. This would also make it easy to adjust for a shorter, cropped wrap.
HDC into second chain from the hook. HDC across chain. Turn, chain 2 and HDC into same stitch and the rest of stitches across.
Continue with HDC for a total of 49 rows or approximately 24 inches.
Row 50 HDC 70 then chain 72 to create the split. You are working no stitches in the remaining 70.
Work HDC in the second chain from the hook, across the chain, and then down the previous row.
Continue with the HDC rows for 50 more rows and end.
The first row after the chain (both times) is a bit fiddly but I think all starting rows are. I crochet over my ends as I go so I only need to weave the starting and end ends in. Not so sure that is the best way but it’s how I do it!

If more starting chains are added are you still beginning the split at row 50?

Unless you want the wrap to be a larger width. If you want it wider just add more rows.

I crochet a bit tight so my starting chain is 242 an I chaining 120 to make the split? I’m a little confused sorry. I love this pattern and am making it for my daughter

Imagine that you are making a blanket with an opening. Do the normal chain unless adding for height, when you have reached the number of rows or half of the width you want that’s where the split comes in.

Thanks for this EASY pattern for a very functional wrap! My mom was diagnosed with cancer a month ago (ovarian stage IIIc), and I wanted to make her something PRACTICAL to keep her warm because, especially with all her weight loss, she is cold all the time. She always wears this old sweatshirt-jacket (old navy thing that is kinda ugly and definitely drab) or she’s got blankets piled on. She also already has a “pretty” prayer shawl, which is lovely but not practical. I also needed something I could get done quickly since she’s already started her chemo and it will be warming up soon anyways. Plus, I’m visiting her right now (she lives across the country) and this way I won’t have to ship it, since it will definitely be heavy. I ended up with a single color rather than a pretty multi-shade like yours for simplicity, cost and softness – it’s the Red Heart Soft Essentials, and they only had solid colors. I do want to make an edging on it, eventually, with a different color or two. I have my project linked to yours on Ravelry (under rhitmom) and I’ll be sure to post photos of the finished product!! I’m just over halfways done right now and plan (hope) to finish it before the end of the week!!!

Wow that looks great. My oldest daughter has tasked me to make it for her cold walk to the printer at her office job. Very creative. I am going to use the foundation chain for the first chain because for me that makes a uniform starting point otherwise I make beg chain to tight. Thanks for sharing.

I have made 2 ruanas like this – one for my adult daughter (in wool) and one for myself (very soft acrylic). Am about to make a third. Thinking about using yarn leftovers for it, kind of like a crazy quilt. I might make it larger, even though I am 5’2″ – just because it’s fun to make in different sizes.

I saw some Ruana’s at our local Cracker Barrel. My husband bought one for me. So soft and warm, but not too warm. My 8 year old grandson came for a visit. My Ruana disappeared. He took it to bed with him and was wearing it the next day. Now he wants me to make him one. Thank you for posting your pictures and the pattern.

I love this. I have seen several nd have been thinking about making one. Then another thought struck me. I do a lot of crocheting for the elderly and the handicapped and I believe, if I made it about waist length, it would work very well for those in wheelchairs and those with difficulty getting their arms into sleeves. As soon as I finish a few projects I have going right now, I believe I’ll try one.

I love this pattern and I can’t wait to finish my first run through.
The directions seem very easy to follow, but I am curious about the size. From what I can tell from my chain 142 at the beginning of it is making something that will be 48 inches long instead of 64 inches. I am using worsted weight Caron yarn and a size J hook. Am I reading the pattern correctly? Is the original chain 142 supposed to be the length?
I am making this for a person who is 5’7 so I would really like for the length to be a bit longer.

Did you double check your gage? That is the length. You could add more starting chains until you get it the length you want. Or use a larger hook. I am short 5ft2 so you might want to add a couple inches for a similar fit.

do I HDC in the 72 chain then the previous 70, or do I HDC the ch “in” the 70?

Are you meaning at the split? If so you HDC in the chain and then in the 70 previous. Imagine it as two halves and you are just not seeming it up. Hope that helps.

Is this made from two crocheted pieces or one. I think it’s gorgeous, but I’m lost after chain 72. Please help, Thanks.

It is made from one. After you work the first 50 rows you work half of the next row (70) and then chain 72. Turn the chain/piece and hdc in all the chain stitches plus the 70 from before. This is making the slit.
You could make two and seam if you prefer.

Beautiful work, simple pattern, easily worked.
Can’t help thinking that this would be perfect opportunity to use fountain hdc or fountain single crochet for both the starting and the additional fire the other half of the split.
